Where In Southern California can I go camping in the wild? As in hike in and set up camp and start a fire?

Question by Mike: Where In Southern California can I go camping in the wild? As in hike in and set up camp and start a fire?
Like that book about Chris Macandless “Into the Wild.” Where can I do that? I was thinking Sequoia National Forest.

The Sequoias are a good choice, the Angeles and San bernardino national forests are closer. A place you might enjoy is dry lake up in the San Gorgonio wilderness it’s a hike in only destination with lots of wildlife around it. Fire restrictions may apply to all locations though. Another is deep creek behind Big bear it has fishing, look up dispersed camping from the different national forests and call the respective forest ranger district offices they will tell you of particular open camping areas away from the established campgrounds where you can practice bush-craft.

Good luck – most sites are already booked – There is very little beach camping in So Calif. Try Central and Northern Calif if you want to camp on the beach. san diego has a pavement RV camp – San Onofre has a pavement cliff camp. encinitas area a cliff camp.
If you’re military they have a couple of nice campgrounds on the beach/base.
LA the few they have are probably booked and not secluded.

Try the mountains of Big Bear if you want to be secluded.

Here’s a great place the family used to go to..before everyone grew up and moved away..we went every year…it has a a small river you can swim, fish and gold pan in.
But if you’re into the desert scene there is Calico ghost town with nearby 2 wheel and 4 wheel areas where you can use fireams.
